Join us on a day trip to the Nemocón Salt Mine, an underground marvel from the 19th century. Plus, we'll hike through the Checua Desert—the ultimate adventure!
At the indicated time, we'll meet at your selected meeting point to start this adventure through the desert of Checua and the Salt Mines of Nemocón. Let's go!
After meeting at the main park of Nemocón, we'll leave you about an hour of free time so you can have breakfast and get your strength back before starting the hiking route.
With your batteries recharged, we'll begin the hike to the Checua desert, also known as “Tatacoita”. Along the easy route, of approximately 7 km (4.1 mi), we'll talk about the fascinating history of this arid region.
Walking through the Checua desert allows us to appreciate unique rock formations, reddish earth canyons, multicolored landscapes and crevices that look like something out of a western movie. It'll be a great experience!
We'll finish the route returning to the starting point in Nemocón, where the effort will be rewarded with lunch. You'll be able to choose between options like trout, pechuga gratinada, chicken fillets with melted cheese on top, or BBQ ribs, accompanied by a delicious ajiaco, a typical soup, and a dessert. Buen provecho!
After lunch, we'll take a short walk through the historic center of Nemocón, getting to know its picturesque streets and its colonial charm, an example of the cultural richness of the municipality. Then, we'll arrive at the second important part of the tour: the Nemocón Salt Mine.
With over 200 years of history, this mine allows you to walk through tunnels surrounded by salt crystals, reflective salt pans and natural chambers strategically illuminated to highlight its structure.
During the visit, we'll learn what life was like for the miners in these subway galleries, as well as the salt extraction techniques they used during the working days.
Then, 2 hours later, we'll say goodbye to our adventure companions in Nemocón, and we'll start our way back to Bogotá, arriving 11 to 12 hours later.
