Join us to explore the Santander landscape on this hiking route along the Camino Real to the Río Suárez canyon, one of the most impressive places in the heart of the Colombian Andes.
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the Simón Bolívar Statue and once we're all together, we'll kick off this hiking activity along the Camino Real in Barichara to the Río Suárez Canyon.
Before we start walking, we'll have a quick introduction to the geography and history of this ancestral trail, which was constructed by an indigenous community in the pre-Columbian era.
Afterwards, we'll start our descent along the Camino Real, crossing a cobbled path that descends 300 metres (984 ft) through the spectacular scenery of the endemic Colombian rainforest.
At one point along the route, the Camino Real will connect with the village of Cabrera, and from there, we'll enter the canyon of the Río Suárez. We'll tell you about the importance of this waterway, which bathes the departments of Boyacá and Santander and stretches 172 kilometres (106 miles) through the Eastern Cordillera of the Andean region.
We'll pass by 2 waterfalls, and we'll stop at the second one to rest and refresh with a drink while we enjoy the sound of the water and take in the energy of nature.
Feeling replenished, we'll return to Cabrera for a guided tour along its streets and learn about its culture and traditions while we admire some highlights such as its central chapel, its park, and a museum. Here, we'll also have time to refresh ourselves before setting off on our return journey.
Finally, we'll say goodbye at the starting point, where we'll arrive after a total of 6 hours of hiking.
