Welcome to the capital of Bolívar! At the scheduled time, we’ll begin our walking tour of the historic center of Cartagena de Indias from Plaza de la Aduana, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
First, we’ll discuss key aspects of the city’s colonial past, including slavery and maritime trade. We’ll also admire the Old Customs House, which currently serves as the headquarters of the Cartagena Mayor’s Office.
Next, we’ll pass through San Pedro Claver Square and Los Coches Square, exploring the colonial buildings in the surrounding area. We’ll also view the exterior of the Cathedral of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, built in the Herrerian style in the mid-16th century.
After leaving behind the most beautiful streets of Cartagena’s Old Town, we’ll head to the San Diego neighborhood, known for its viceregal houses, street art, and floral decorations.
We’ll admire the buildings surrounding San Diego Square, the heart of the neighborhood, and learn which historic convents and colonial-style houses are the most notable in this part of Cartagena.
Finally, after a walk of approximately 2.5 hours, we’ll conclude the tour at Las Bóvedas de Santa Clara, a set of 18th-century dungeons whose cells now house craft and souvenir shops.
