Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet at the Plaza de Los Coches in Cartagena de Indias and begin this free tour about emeralds, one of the most valuable precious stones in the world.
We'll walk along the cobbled streets of the city's historic center while we tell you how Cartagena was one of the most important ports in the trade of precious stones and gold during the Colonial period, and how this legacy lives on today.
Then, we'll stroll around the Plaza de Bolívar, where we'll tell you about the role jewellers play in the city. We'll also explore the Calle de la Moneda, where, in the past, the riches were brought from the emerald mines of Muzo, Coscuez, and Chivor. Plus, we'll see some of the Colonial houses that were gem warehouses.
Afterward, we'll visit an emerald gallery or workshop. Here, you'll discover the origin, history, and extraction and carving process of these gems. You'll learn how to distinguish an authentic emerald from a synthetic one, see the carving, polishing, and setting process, and learn about the history behind each stone.
To end the free tour on a high note, we'll say our goodbyes at the Plaza de Bolívar with a tasting of a typical beverage, like a coconut lemonade. We'll finish the activity here after 2.5 hours.
