Between the Colombian departments of Boyacá and Santander lies the Iguaque Flora and Fauna Sanctuary. We'll explore its trails in search of endemic species with this hiking route.
At the designated time, we'll meet at Carrera 9 in Villa de Leyva to set off toward the Iguaque Flora and Fauna Sanctuary, which is part of Colombia's national parks.
Once we're there, we'll start our hiking route of approximately 27.96 miles (4,5 kilometers). During this approximately 6-hour hike, we'll pass through moorlands full of local fauna such as squirrels, armadillos, rabbits, and bats. We'll also come across oak trees, pine trees, mosses, lichens, orchids, ferns, and mortiños. It's not surprising that with so much variety it's consecrated as a sanctuary.
We'll also see the Iguaque Lagoon, a sacred aquifer for the Muisca Indians, which is home to up to three species of woodpeckers. Do you know the legend of the goddess Bachué? We'll learn all about it!
Afterward, we'll go up to an altitude of 13123 feet (4000 meters) to observe the natural site from the heights. You'll love it!
Finally, we'll get on the minibus and head back to Villa de Leyva, where we'll arrive at the meeting point after a total of 8 hours.
