Trip Details
Day 1: Pitalito - San Agustín
At the designated time, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Pitalito and we'll begin this exciting 2-day trip to San Agustín. This area is home to some of Colombia's most emblematic archaeological sites. Let's go!
After a 45-minute journey, we'll reach Salto del Mortiño, a spectacular waterfall that is over 200 metres (656 feet) tall. Here, we'll go on a walk along a trail to reach a viewpoint and get amazing scenic views.
Once we're up high, you'll be able to take the best keepsake photos and afterwards, you'll be able to visit a glass viewpoint to observe the waterfall under your feet. It'll be a dizzying, adrenaline-filled moment!
Next, we'll visit the Alto de las Piedras and Alto de los Ídolos Archaeological Park, declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1995. We'll travel back in time by delving into the cultural legacy of this megalithic territory of pre-Columbian civilizations.
The remains of this site are notable for the uniqueness of their human and animal representations, particularly their size and the presence of paintings on both the statues and the walls of the tombs and small temples.
Once we finish our guided tour, we'll have a break to re-energise and enjoy a tasty traditional Colombian lunch. An hour later, we'll make our way to the Obando Community Archeological Museum, which houses a collection of objects from two Indigenous cultures that lived at different times.
After exploring the museum, we'll end the first day on a high note at the majestic Magdalena River Strait, where the river is forced to grow smaller to flow between rocks that form a 1.70-metre (5.6 feet) canal. You'll be blown away by the landscape's beauty!
Lastly, we'll take you to the hotel in San Agustín we'll be spending the night at, where you can have dinner and rest.
Day 2: San Agustín - Pitalito
Early in the morning, we'll have a tasty breakfast before leaving behind the accommodation to begin our second day of the trip.
We'll spend the whole morning learning about the fascinating history of the San Agustín Archaeological Park, which holds the biggest collection of religious monuments and statues made of stone in Colombia.
These statues spread out across the park's 78 hectares pay homage to the funeral rites of the ancient inhabitants of the Huila region, who believed in life after death and worshipped many gods, amongst which animals and natural elements were featured.
At noon, our tour of this archaeological site will come to an end and we'll begin our journey back to the initial meeting point in Pitalito, where we'll arrive around 1 pm.
