At the indicated time, we'll begin this private tour of Nimes from the square where the temple of the Maison Carrée is located.
The Roman period in Nîmes was one of the most important periods in the city's history. We'll tell you how in 27 B.C. the Emperor Augustus decided to found this city in Gaul, which was to become the capital of the province of Narbonne. Did you know that this region was key to safely allowing the road to Hispania?
The great monument from the Imperial period that remains in the city is the Roman amphitheatre of Nîmes. From the outside, you'll see this "little Coliseum of Rome", where gladiatorial combats and other public spectacles were held and which were a great success with nobles and commoners alike.
We'll continue our walk through the park of La Fontaine Gardens. In this beautiful space, which dates back to the 17th century, we'll see the remains of the Temple of Diana and the Tour Magne, an ancient Roman watchtower 18 m (59 ft) high.
