On this trip to the Tierradentro National Archaeological Park, we'll explore one of the most important necropolis in the world in 2 days. It'll be a true journey back in time!
Day Trip Details
Day 1: Neiva - Inza
At the designated time, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Neiva to begin this 2-day trip to the Tierradentro National Archaeological Park, found in the municipality of Inza.
After an approximately 4-hour journey, we'll reach the hotel where we'll stay. After leaving our luggage in the rooms, we'll meet up once again to re-energise and taste Colombian cuisine with a typical tasty lunch.
An hour later, we'll set off to the Tierradentro National Archaeological Park, one of the most important necropolis in the world. Firstly, we'll go on a guided tour of the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography, where we'll discover the region's rich history and culture through the remains of the groups that inhabited the area in times prior to 1000 AD.
We'll continue our tour at the Alto de Segovia and the Alto del Duende, two of the park's most significant archaeological sites, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. These areas are characterised by their enigmatic underground tombs called hypogea, which feature rock art created by ancient civilizations depicting the cult of death.
Lastly, in the afternoon, we'll return to the accommodation, where we'll have dinner and rest.
Day 2: Inza - Neiva
Early in the morning, we'll have a delicious breakfast before setting off towards the San Francisco path to visit La Pirámide (The Pyramid). This stone step construction, discovered in 1820, has 3 mysterious tunnels that lead into the centre of the mountain from the lowest points of its slopes.
According to anthropologists, to make these tunnels, 2000 tons of rock had to be removed, and though we don't know why, it is believed that La Pirámide was an important religious centre for those who lived in the area. Impressive, isn't it? We'll tell you all the details about this spot!
After this journey to the past and taking some keepsake photos at the top of this mountain, we'll visit the Páez Indigenous community and get to know their history while we explore their artisanal shops.
At noon, we'll re-energise with lunch and, 1 hour later, we'll begin our journey back to Neiva, where we'll say our goodbyes around 5:30 pm.
