Want to explore the Sistine Chapel of cave art? If you're in Matera, you can't miss this visit to the Crypt of Original Sin, one of the most peculiar temples in Basilicata.
Tour Details
Are you ready to visit one of the oldest Christian places of worship in Matera? We'll meet at the indicated time at the entrance of the Cripta del Peccato.
Once we're ready, you'll have 30 minutes to explore the cave at your leisure. Your audio guide in English will draw your attention to fascinating details on the paintings and tell you all about them. The frescoes painted on the cave walls date back to the 9th century and depict several scenes from Genesis.
However, the most famous painting in the crypt is one that portrays the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise. Don't look for an apple! In this scene, you'll see a fig symbolising the forbidden fruit. Why is that?
After the visit, you'll head to an ancient masseria at your own pace. Here, we'll enjoy a tasting of typical local appetizers, such as Matera bread, taralli, bruschetta, a selection of meats and cheeses, turkey rolls, dessert, a glass of wine, and coffee. The perfect finishing touch!
Finally, after 1 hour and 20 minutes, we'll conclude the experience.
