Aveiro Salt Flats Tour
At the scheduled time, we'll meet at the Pórtico do Canal to begin our guided tour of the Aveiro salt fields, one of the most unique landscapes in northern Portugal. While we wander through the fields, we'll learn how the extraction process is carried out for one of Aveiro's most important products.
During the tour, we'll discover more about the "marnotos", the people who extract salt by hand with wooden utensils, and the "salineiras", who transport it in wicker baskets to the boats. In fact, such is the importance of both professions in Aveiro that there are two statues paying tribute to them in the very center of the city.
We'll also find out about salt's therapeutic properties, how it is used in different sectors, including cosmetics and gastronomy. We'll also learn how this ecosystem has been formed and which species of fauna and flora inhabit this environment.
Finally, after a 45-minute visit, we'll conclude the tour of the salt flats by returning to the meeting point. There, depending on the season, we'll taste sea salt, fleur de sel, or salicornia, unique flavors linked to the region.
